Overview

Laure Ghorayeb is a self-taught Lebanese artist born in 1931 in the village of Deir al-Qamar. She first started out as a cultural journalist/critic and a poet and has worked at several magazines including Shi’r, L’Orient, Le Jour and Annahar. Currently known for her intricate and detailed ink drawings, Ghorayeb’s work represents chronicles of her life as well as events and people that have had an impact on her such as the Lebanese civil wars and members of her family. This publication looks back on her transition from writer to painter. "Laure Ghorayeb: Black on White" is the second publication in the Saradar Collection x Kaph Books series and includes texts by Venetia Porter and Dr. Maha Azizé Sultan as well as a conversation between the artist and her son Mazen Kerbage.

About the Artist

Laure Ghorayeb

Born in Der El Qamar in 1931, Laure Ghorayeb Lives and works in Beirut. She is a painter, cultural journalist and critic who has given an inimitable trace since 1962. She has participated in solo and collective exhibitions locally and internationally. Previously she has collaborated with her son Mazen Kerbaj on two shows in 2007 and 2010. Ghorayeb also took part in “Pinceaux pour Plumes” at the Sursock Museum, and Convergence - New Art from Lebanon”, at the Katzen Art Center of the American University in Washington DC. Ghorayeb’s work was acquired by the British Museum for their permanent collection.

Venetia Porter

Venetia Porter was Senior Curator for Islamic and Contemporary Middle East art at the British Museum (1989-2022) where she is now Honorary Research Fellow. She studied Arabic and Persian and Islamic Art at the University of Oxford, and her PhD from the University of Durham is on the history and architecture of Medieval Yemen. She was the lead curator for the Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World, opened 2018. Her research and publications range from Islamic tiles, Yemeni history, Arabic inscriptions and amulets to contemporary art, and include her mother’s autobiography Thea Porter’s scrapbook which she edited (Unicorn Press 2019). Her exhibitions with accompanying publications include Word into Art: Artists of the Modern Middle East (London 2006, Dubai 2008), Hajj: journey to the heart of Islam (2012), Reflections: contemporary art of the Middle East and North Africa (2021) and Amakin, 21,39 Jeddah Arts, 9th edition, (Jeddah and Dhahran 2022). Artists making books: poetry to politics, was published by British Museum Press in 2023.

Dr Maha Azize Sultan

A critic and a researcher in the visual arts. She is a lecturer since 1995, specialized in History of modern and Contemporary Art. Her researches have been a center of Arab debates. She participated in events and conferences held in Jordan, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Algeria, Morocco and Paris… She has many researches and publications. She represented Lebanon in Arab and International conferences since 1996, and was awarded prizes and certificates of appreciation. She is a member of the jury committee of many art exhibitions.
