Mamluks: Legacy of an Empire

$45

Overview

Catalogue of the exhibition Mamluks: Legacy of an Empire, presented at Louvre Abu Dhabi from 17 September 2025 to 25 January 2026, co-organised by Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Musée du Louvre, and France Muséums.

This volume traces the history of the Mamluk Sultanate (1250–1517), one of the great powers of the medieval world, known both for its formidable military force and its flourishing artistic production. Positioned at the crossroads of trade routes linking Europe, Africa, and Asia, the Mamluks developed a refined art deeply shaped by intense cultural exchange.

Featuring nearly 270 works - illuminated manuscripts, architectural decorations, precious objects, and weapons - the exhibition unveils a pluralistic society with diverse forms of craftsmanship.

The catalogue offers a historical and cultural introduction to this powerful dynasty and highlights the artistic excellence of the Mamluk era, while tracing the circulation of knowledge, influences, and goods from China to Ghana, and from Venice to Cairo.

This publication accompanies the second adapted iteration of the exhibition, which will open this autumn at Louvre Abu Dhabi.
